Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia
This image is part of the Colonial Office photographic collection held at The National Archives UK.
In 1854 the jetty in the south bay was completed, and in that year Fremantle, for the first time in its history, had a population of over 1,000, the official figures being 1,607. In 1862, a heavy gale in May caused damage to the jetty in the South Bay and created floods in Cliff Street. [The History of Fremantle: The Front Gate of Australia, 1829-1929, J. K. Hitchcock]
