South of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
This image is part of the Colonial Office photographic collection held at The National Archives UK.
Huon Road is a road that travels South-West out of Hobart to a little mountain town called Fern Tree. Up until the 1830s, the village of Fern Tree could only be reached by a rough track. In 1830 the first Huon Road was built, starting at the Sandy Bay Rivulet, through to Fern Tree and on into the south-west.
Photograph taken on the Huon Road, showing a building on the side of a hill and a horse and open carriages with a man standing to the side on a dirt road, south of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. The original photo was taken ca. 1868.
