Fern Tree became very popular with early tourists due to its beauty and its proximity to the city. It was a preferred venue for family picnics and organised strawberry feasts. The Fern Tree Bower was particularly beautiful, with a rustic shelter shed and long tables set beneath large tree ferns. The Bower still exists but has been much changed since a large flood completely reshaped the area in the 1960s. [Mt. Wellington History]
